Using AI is easier than integrating AI.
It takes minutes to start using an AI model like ChatGPT. Organizational wide integration and implementation is more complex. It requires redesigning workflows, setting policies, connecting data, defining accountability, measuring outcomes, managing risk, and changing how roles, tasks and teams’ work.
Using AI and redesigning an organization to work around it are two different endeavors. This creates a gap between individual usage and organizational capability.
As individuals we can use AI for drafting, summarizing, brainstorming, coding, or research, while the organization still lacks:
- approved workflows,
- organization wide standards,
- reliable integrations,
- evaluation methods,
- training by task, role, or teams,
- governance and security controls,
- ownership of business outcomes,
- and evidence of sustained ROI.
Individual use across many organizations was is high but impact on the bottom line is still minimal or in some cases non-existent.
Widespread use is a sign of individual productivity not organizational transformation.
